Stoke 1-0 Newcastle - The 'Index 6'
Another away day, another defeat. When Newcastle travelled to Stoke, there were really no excuses pre match. We had a side out there which on paper, should have been strong enough to get at least a point. But once more, the Geordie following was let down again, by a mix of a range of things. Let's take a look at this week's personal-specific Index 6. Rob Elliot
Before this season, Rob Elliot was almost a nobody as far as playing games for NUFC. Tim Krul was playing and never looked like being dropped, so when Krul was injured, fans could be forgiven for the concern over Rob Elliot.
However, Rob Elliot could easily be described as one of the only positives of this season. He has risen to the occasion frequently and has consistently managed top class saves to keep us in games. At Stoke however, there is no doubt that he let us down for the only goal of the game. Whether Rob Elliot saw the ball late or not, the ball was so close to him before going over the line, and it's one that should have been saved. At times like these we can't afford errors as such, and let's hope he can put in a clean sheet at home to Bournemouth on Saturday. Daryl Janmaat
In case some of you don't know, Janmaat appeared to engage in a heated debate with NUFC fans after the game and was then given some heavy abuse by fans at the game and also on social media. Out of our squad I think Janmaat would be one of the last of the players to receive criticism this season, he's been solid and been probably our second biggest attacking threat this season. However, in these circumstances, staring relegation in the eyes, no player should be praised, and Janmaat is no exception. The outburst may show passion, but no dout it is better directed out on the field. Moussa Sissoko
This man is a deluded con artist. Moussa Sissoko has continually spoke of his Champions League ambitions to play for a big club, of course those ambitions are understandable. However, if you want to talk, you have to be able to deliver good performances consistently, which Sissoko doesn't. After another shocking performance against Stoke, will he get dropped? I very much doubt it. Andros Townsend
I think everyone will agree when I say that we already seem a different team without Andros Townsend. The tricky winger missed the game with Stoke, and we lacked any sort of flair and pace going forward. We need Townsend back fit as soon as possible, or if he is unable to play, no doubt Rolando Aarons should be drafted in if we wish to replicate the job that Andros does. Georginio Wijnaldum
You wouldn't be able to tell if Wijnaldum had played on Wednesday, after once again, the Dutchman failed to show any sort of talent as a footballer away from St. James Park. There is no doubt the player is talented and has been our best player this season, but between now and the end of the season, Wijnaldum needs to bring the performances for the travelling fans if we are to stay up. Steve McClaren
For me, this man is on par with John Carver, and that takes some doing. I watched McClaren's interview with BBC Newcastle after the game, and he said that the game with Bournemouth had "now became important". I am baffled that a man of his experience at a high level would suggest a game against a relegation rival does not hold huge significance. This man is an idiot. He is tactically inadequate and he is contributing hugely to the downfall of this football club.
