The Future of Newcastle United FC

Every year, twice a season, as Newcastle fans we face the an event which can very easily prove traumatic. That event is the transfer window. With a man like Mike Ashley, a man who despite any promise, is solely motivated by financial benefits at the helm, we can never rest easy that we will build a squad capable of competing at the top. With that in mind, it may be good to have a look at some players in every position with a view that many of our better players may choose to move on or we accept a bid deemed suitable. This is of course based on staying as a Premier League club, not to fault my optimism. Goalkeeper: None For me, the goalkeeping position is one that at the beginning of the season, I would have said we were weak. However, Rob Elliot has given some outstanding performances this season, much to the surprise of many. I'm not quite sure whether Karl Darlow will ever make it here, with alarm bells that he didn't even play as first team keeper at Forest in his loan season there.

We then of course have Freddie Woodman, young lad with a huge future and someone who could easily take over from Tim Krul in years to come. If Krul were to leave this Summer, I'd personally have enough confidence in Elliot to have a season between the sticks as Woodman prepared himself.

Right Back: Sam Byram The Leeds full back has recently been deployed as a winger at the Yorkshire club, however for me, I feel his best position is at RB and he would be my choice to come in if Janmaat were to leave. He's English, huge future and knows what it's like to play at a club with a lot of pressure. He's also out of contract this Summer and we all know Mike Ashley loves a bargain.

Centre Back: Joel Matip This guy was the player you expect to see in this list. Already linked and another player who's contract expires in June 2016. He's a defender who has been at a big club for quite a few years, however there are a number of clubs competing in Europe such as Liverpool and AC Milan also apparently interested. You'd then question his sanity if he were to choose us over clubs of that calibre.

Left Back: Jordan Amavi Having signed for Aston Villa last Summer, he actually became the bright spark in their miserable season. However, he picked up a season ending injury on France U21 duty, but providing he can return to fitness and prove to be over the worst, he would be a great signing, at a reduced price also given the fact it's almost certain he'd be purchased from a Championship club.

Winger: Andros Townsend This is the most crystal clear signing we HAVE to make. He's an incredibly skilful winger, he's quick, he's got an eye for goal. He's got everything which we don't appear to have so far. He is massively out of favour at Tottenham, but that doesn't stop him reportedly having a £14m price tag over his head. Something which would cast huge doubt over any potential deal.

Centre Mid: Lewis Cook Another young English player who's came through the youth, as was part of the England U17 squad, alongside Freddie Woodman and Adam Armstrong that won the European Championships. He's a box to box midfielder with a huge future. The only criticism of him currently is his lack of ability to find the back of the net.

Forward: Charlie Austin This is another simple no brainer. He's a player who scored 18 goals in the PL last season, yet finds himself still at QPR. Another out of contract, many believe he should probably be brought in now to save our season. It will also be another English player rather than going for a player with no PL experience at all.
